Design & Technology

At St Peter’s, our vision for Design and Technology is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child. We believe D&T empowers pupils to become innovative thinkers and problem-solvers, equipping them with practical skills and a deep understanding of how design shapes the world around them. Through hands-on experiences, children learn to take risks, collaborate, and reflect - skills that are essential for life beyond the classroom.

Intent

Our Design and Technology curriculum is shaped by a commitment to curiosity, responsibility, and excellence. We want pupils to explore how things work, ask thoughtful questions, and design with empathy and sustainability in mind. Every project encourages children to take ownership of their learning, reflect on their choices, and strive for high-quality outcomes. Through purposeful design tasks, pupils develop technical knowledge and practical skills while deepening their understanding of how design influences the world around them.

Implementation

Design and Technology is delivered through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and skills. Each unit follows a clear design process—research, plan, make, and evaluate—allowing children to develop confidence and independence. Lessons are inclusive and respectful, ensuring that all children, regardless of background or ability, can succeed and express themselves through design. Pupils engage in structured projects that challenge them to solve real-world problems, work with a variety of materials and tools safely, and collaborate effectively with their peers. Food technology is also a key component, where children learn about nutrition, hygiene, and cooking in a hands-on and engaging way.

Impact

By the time children leave St Peters, pupils will demonstrate resilience in overcoming design challenges, creativity and originality in their products, and respect and collaboration in their approach to teamwork. They will take responsibility for their design choices and reflect thoughtfully on their impact. Our children leave with a strong understanding of the design process, the ability to use tools and materials confidently, and a sense of pride in their creations. Most importantly, they are equipped with the skills and mind set to think practically and creatively enabling them to take on the challenges of the modern world.
