Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5 - a year full of discovery, creativity, and growing independence! Our class is led by Miss Rigby, with support from our wonderful teaching assistant Mrs Zaman. Together, we’re here to guide, challenge, and celebrate every child’s learning journey.
What We’re Learning
Year 5 is packed with fascinating topics that spark curiosity and deepen understanding:
- Science: We explore the wonders of space, investigating planets, gravity, and the solar system.
- History: Our studies include the Islamic Golden Age, where we uncover incredible contributions to science, maths, and art, and Ancient Greece, with a special focus on democracy and how it shaped the world.
- PSHE: Through the Mini Medics programme, children learn essential first aid skills and explore positive mental health and wellbeing.
- Global Policing Programme: In partnership with Year 6, children learn about the law, personal safety, and how to be responsible citizens in today’s world.
Transition Project with Secondary School
We’re proud to offer a transition project with our local secondary school. Year 5 pupils get hands-on experience using specialist facilities in:
- Science labs
- Art studios
- Computing suites
- …and much more!
This exciting opportunity helps children build confidence and familiarity with secondary school life.
Reading Expectations
Reading is the heartbeat of learning in Year 5. We expect children to:
- Read their home reader every evening
- Bring their book to school daily
- Explore a wide range of texts from our school library
Reading regularly builds vocabulary, imagination, and confidence - so let’s make it a daily habit!
PE Days & Kit
PE takes place every Monday and Friday. Children must come prepared with:
- A white t-shirt
- Plain black shorts/leggings or black tracksuit bottoms
- Black trainers
- No jewellery is allowed for safety reasons
Please ensure all kit is clearly labelled and in school on PE days.
Homework
Homework is handed out every Monday and must be returned by the following Monday. It supports classroom learning and encourages independent study habits.
Children also have access to:
- Times Table Rock Stars - for speedy multiplication practice
- Purple Mash - for interactive learning across subjects
Stay in Touch
We’re always here to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you have any questions or need to speak with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Miss Rigby or Mrs Zaman.
