Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5 - a year full of discovery, creativity, and growing independence! Our class is led by Miss Coar, with support from our wonderful teaching assistant Mrs Siddique. Together, we’re here to guide, challenge, and celebrate every child’s learning journey.
What We’re Learning
Year 5 is packed with fascinating topics that spark curiosity and deepen understanding:
- Science: We explore the life cycle of animals and the wonders of space, investigating planets, gravity, and the solar system.
- History: Our studies include the Islamic Golden Age, where we uncover incredible contributions to science, maths, and art, and Ancient Greece, with a special focus on democracy and how it shaped the world.
- Geography: We will study counties, understanding more about the county we live in and economic activity.
- Art: We will be learning how to develop our observational drawing skills as well as learning the techniques of printing.
Transition Project with Secondary School
We’re proud to offer a transition project with our local secondary school. Year 5 pupils get hands-on experience using specialist facilities in:
- Science labs
- Art studios
- Computing suites
- …and much more!
This exciting opportunity helps children build confidence and familiarity with secondary school life.
Reading Expectations
Reading is the heartbeat of learning in Year 5. We expect children to:
- Read their home reader every evening
- Bring their book to school daily
- Explore a wide range of texts from our school library
Reading regularly builds vocabulary, imagination, and confidence - so let’s make it a daily habit!
PE Days & Kit
PE takes place every Monday and Wednesday. Children must come to school in their PE kit:
- Plain white t-shirt or with school logo
- Plain Black joggers or black joggers with school logo
- Purple hoodie or school jumper with school logo.
- No jewellery is allowed for safety reasons.
Homework
Homework is handed out every Friday and must be returned by the following Friday. It supports classroom learning and encourages independent study habits - this will usually be work online.
Children also have access to:
- Times Table Rock Stars - for speedy multiplication practice
- Purple Mash - for interactive learning across subjects
- SPAG- for knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Stay in Touch
We’re always here to support your child’s learning and well-being. If you have any questions or need to speak with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Miss Coar or Mrs Siddique.
Let’s make Year 5 a year to remember!
