Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

Welcome to our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum page! At St Peter’s, we believe that learning a new language opens doors to different cultures, broadens horizons, and builds confidence in communication. Our MFL programme is designed to be fun, interactive, and accessible for all pupils at Key Stage Two.

What We Teach

Our curriculum introduces children to the basics of a modern foreign language, French, with a strong focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We use songs, games, stories, and role-play to make language learning exciting and memorable.

Children begin their language journey with simple vocabulary and phrases, learning through play and repetition.

  • Greetings: Saying hello, goodbye, and introducing themselves
  • Instructions: Understanding and following basic classroom commands
  • Christmas: Exploring festive vocabulary and traditions
  • Numbers to 20: Counting and simple maths in another language
  • Age: Saying how old they are
  • Classroom Objects: Naming items around them
  • Colours: Learning colours through art and games
  • Pets: Talking about animals and favourite pets
  • Family: Introducing family members
  • Christmas (revisited): Songs, stories, and cultural celebrations

Developing Vocabulary

Pupils expand their vocabulary and begin forming simple sentences.

  • Numbers to 30: Counting higher and using numbers in context
  • Months of the Year: Talking about seasons and dates
  • Birthdays: Saying when their birthday is and celebrating others

Expanding Understanding

Children begin to use the language more independently and explore cultural contexts.

  • Where I Live: Describing their home and surroundings
  • Countries: Naming countries and nationalities
  • Numbers to 60: Using numbers in real-life scenarios
  • Weather: Talking about the weather and seasons

Our Approach

We aim to foster a love of languages through:

  • Interactive lessons with visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic activities
  • Cultural enrichment through festivals, food tasting, and themed days
  • Opportunities to perform songs and dialogues
  • Cross-curricular links with geography, art, and music

Assessment & Progress

Children are assessed informally through observation, participation, and practical tasks. We celebrate progress and encourage pupils to take pride in their achievements.
